Schools |
The School System consists of 47 schools; currently, four new schools and new classrooms are being added to the System. All schools provide curriculum required by federal, state and local policies; in addition, a wide variety of electives, enrichment and extracurricular activities are offered at all school.
All schools in the System are accredited or are candidates for accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Three public schools in the parish have been named National Schools of Excellence by the US. Department of Education. Students consistently score above national and state levels on two standardized tests used to measure student achievement, the California Achievement Test (CAT) and Louisiana Education Assessment Program (LEAP). Sixty seven percent (67%) of high school graduates go to college.
The System has about 4,000 employees; of this number, about 2,400 are teachers and almost 46% of them have master degrees or higher. Safe, reliable bus transportation is provided to the students.
Before-and/or-after school child care programs are offered at a small cost at some schools through the Community Education program. The nutrition program is nationally recognized; it serves breakfast and lunch, which are offered for free or at reduced cost.
Various schools facilities are available on selected afternoons and evenings for recreational, social, and cultural enrichment programs for children and adults.
First-time St. Tammany students require: certified birth certificate, health record, proof of residence, transfer form and assignment letter for high school students and those transferring within the parish (other than grade promotions from feeder schools), and social security number.
Making education relevant for all students is a primary aim of the system. Graduates are being prepared to continue their education or to enter the workforce immediately. Early childhood education receives much attention, and classes for four year olds are provided at some schools. Numerous academic programs and alternative opportunities are provided for all identified exceptional children ages 3-21. The system provides programs for all disabled conditions plus programs for students identified as talented and gifted. Hospital/home-bound services are also provided to students who will be out of school three weeks or more.
Day and nighttime programs are available for people working toward their General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Adults and high school students over the age of 16 can attend the Louisiana Technical College in Slidell and study Business, Nursing, Computers, and other courses along with many different skilled trades. There is one community college and three higher learning institutions which offer courses in Slidell. Over thirteen higher learning institutions are within commuting distance from Slidell.
The St. Tammany Parish Library system is one of the best in the state. It has 11 branches in all with the branch at Robert Boulevard in Slidell being the largest and most heavily used. This branch offers over 75,000 titles, including books, audio tapes, video tapes and CDs. The reference collection is excellent and includes many business oriented titles. Services and programs for children (both preschool and school age) are especially notable. A smaller branch is located in Lauren Plaza on Pontchartrain Drive. For further information call 646-6470.
